It appears The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier was not a big hit with the group. I think it's safe to say it was our least favorite of everything we read. Hey, we can't like them all can we.
First, there was too much character jumping. Half the time we had to search through the first part of the book just to figure out who he was talking about. Second, we're unsure about the ending: Did Jerry die from the massive beating he got or did he make it? As for me, I was hoping the conniving bully of the book (Archie) would get what he had coming to him. I know life isn't always like that where the bad guys get what they deserve in the end, but for me I like a book that ends that way. Well, I guess you can't win them all. Sorry Robert. Now, for our next book, I'm actually intrigued to read it: Stork by Wendy DelSol. It's supposed to be inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen. You know how much I like a good retelling?
